Motivation - With Concrete we build our Future
Concrete is the most popular building material in the world. There is a lot of information to find, there are thousands of publications, journals and conferences. Worldwide Estimated Cement Consumption 1926 - 2007
98% of Cement produced is going into Concrete and therefore Cement consumption is a good indicator for Concrete need. In average about 300 kg of Cement are going into 1 m3 of concrete. On the graph above you can see, how cement consumption evolved over the last 80 years and you can make different projections for the next years – even if there will be a tremendous slow down, consumption and growth will still be enormous. Cement is one of the most relevant producers of human made CO2. This climate threat everybody is concerned and obviously there is no simple answer. Quite an impressive reduction of CO2 was achieved over the last 40 years but it is still very high. Concrete is and will be still for a considerable time the most important building material we have. Therefore it is even more important than ever to make the best possible out of this material. Everybody who works with concrete should know what concrete can and what it can not.
